The 28-year-old man was severely injured and died at the scene. Newcrest suspended production at Cadia while local police worked with the Mine Safety Investigators.

“Newcrest confirms a mine technician was fatally injured at the Cadia Ridgeway gold mine on the evening of Sunday 6 September 2015. Newcrest is liaising with the NSW Police and NSW Mine Safety Inspectorate and assisting both agencies with their enquiries. The circumstances of the fatality are under investigation and no further details are available at this time. We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to family, friends and work colleagues with support being provided at this very difficult time. Production at Cadia has been suspended,” the company said in a statement.

Last Friday, Newcrest – one of the world’s largest gold mining companies – announced that it has restarted operations at the mine.

“Operations are recommencing at Cadia following the suspension of production after the fatality on Sunday 6 September 2015. The process plant is being re-started today, with mine production from Cadia East to recommence over the coming few days. The Ridgeway mine remains suspended.
