A new workshop organised by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) will provide 24 Pittsworth and Millmerran students with a chance to witness first-hand how maths and science are applied in the real world today.
The Expand Your Mind workshop – which aims to motivate and inspire young people to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths – will see representatives from Downer Engineering and Millmerran Operating Company mentor the students in practical tasks involving environmental, chemical processing and design and engineering, while sharing their personal study and career experiences.
“Expand your Mind involves higher order thinking activity for students. For our year nines to be doing such as activity at this age is wonderful,” said Nancy Pattel, Head of Science at Pittsworth State High School.
“I think the industry representatives enjoy the day just as much as the students,” said Tammy Grady Senior Project Officer, QMEA.
The QMEA is Australia’s largest and most successful industry/education schools partnership between the Queensland resources sector represented by the Queensland Resources Council and the Queensland State Government.
It offers a range of programs and experiences to broaden students’ and teachers’ knowledge of the sector and provide pathways for young people into resource sector related careers.
