The Stratford Mining Complex – owned and operated by Yancoal’s subsidiary Stratford Coal – is an open cut coal mining operation located in the Gloucester Basin, approximately 100 kilometres north of Newcastle in New South Wales.

The Stratford extension project envisages the extension of mining into three new open cut mining areas (Roseville West Pit Extension, Avon North Open Cut and Stratford East Open Cut), as well as continuation of mining in the Bowens Road North Open Cut and opportunistic recovery of Stratford Coal Handling and Preparation Plant (CHPP) rejects from the western co-disposal area.

The Project would allow an additional 11 years of mining at up to 2.6 million tonnes per annum and would double the operational workforce to up to 250 personnel onsite.

Adertisement

“The Commission supports the project, as it allows for the rational and efficient extraction of a coal resource within an existing mine, and ensures the continuation of its strong association with the nearby Duralie mine,” the NSWPAC stated in its approval.

Yancoal said the proposed extension is yet to secure approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act from the Commonwealth Department of the Environment.
