Komatsu and GE Transportation to develop next-generation mining equipment

Komatsu and GE Mining have struck an agreement to collaborate on developing next generation mining equipment which would meet the needs and requirements of customers and commercial partners around the globe.

According to the media release by Komatsu, the joint collaboration between the companies will be focused on developing solutions to increase customer productivity and safety for underground mines.

The new company will bear the name of Komatsu GE Mining Systems LCC and will be headquartered at the GE Transportation facility in Erie, Pennsylvania, with each party owning 50% of the new company.

Komatsu and GE Transportation, the parent company of GE Mining, have been partners for Komatsu electric dump trucks for use in open-pit mines, for which GE has provided electric drive systems. Under the terms of the agreement, GE will be tasked to provide its electric power expertise, electric drive systems and battery technologies, while Komatsu will provide its vehicles and ITC technologies for mining equipment to deliver innovative solutions to global mining customers.
